It can be difficult to start learning. Firstly, you're busy. Perhaps you work or study, maybe you have children, or a busy social life. Whatever your circumstances, it can be difficult to invest time in improving your language skills. So, here are my top tips to help you start.

  • Think about why you want to learn. What is your goal? Having something to work towards can be very motivating.
  • Don't worry! "Business English" may sound scary, but remember you only need to learn what is relevant to you.
  • Use the resources around you. There are lots of newspapers, radio stations and online tutorials available, plus forums and groups for support.
  • Don't worry if you don't understand everything you read/hear. Just being in contact with English will make a difference, believe me.
  • Know what time of day works best for you. Some people are most alert first thing in the morning; for others, the early hours are ideal.
  • Start small. Learn a word or phrase a day, for example. Don't try to know too much, too soon. All in good time.
