I love YouTube. I have spent (and, at times, wasted) many hours watching videos of all sorts. It’s a great resource and I think everyone who has internet access should use it regularly. There are some fantastic videos for learning English (be cautious, however, as there are also some questionable ones), but I made a decision very early not to jump on the YouTube bandwagon. And there are reasons for this.

Firstly, the videos you will find from English teachers are completely random. I will say again that many of them are great, but they don’t follow a logical sequence to build your knowledge gradually and in context. As a result, you'll be less likely to remember the vocabulary, grammar point or topic of the video that you are watching, and therefore less likely to be able to apply it in a real-life situation.

Secondly, I prefer for my students to tell me what they want to focus on. Structured courses work differently, but when it comes to videos, it is not up to me to decide what you should be learning, or what you are likely to be having difficulties with. I rely on the communication from my students to let me know what the challenges are. I prefer to tailor my videos to the needs of those who are working with me, rather than trying to appeal to a mass audience and potentially appealing to no one at all. This means that I can provide videos on pronunciation, reading, writing AND listening, always knowing that someone has specifically asked and will therefore benefit.

Thirdly, creating a YouTube channel with regular videos that people really want to watch takes a huge amount of time. I prefer to invest my time working on resources for my students, those who have invested both their time and their money with me. You deserve to have the very best that I can offer. So, while I will use videos as a way to enhance your experience by providing an extra dimension to lessons, they are not my primary means of teaching and never will be.
